Interior Designer Vermont ~ Iconic Finnish Design
Keeping to the Scandinavian theme I am highlighting one of my favourite fabric designer brands ~ Marimekko ~ whose large colourful flower pattern is instantly recognisable.
Marimekko is a world renowned and iconic Finnish textile and clothing design company whose trademark is it’s vibrant and bold original prints, patterns and colours. It was founded in 1951 by the innovative designers Viljo and Armi Ratia and today is a thriving business that has branched out into selling not only textiles but clothing, linen, bedding, homeware for bathrooms, kitchens and a wide range of accessories.
The brand is probably best known for it’s association with the style icon Jackie Kennedy who in 1960 bought several of the brands dresses for the campaign trail with her husband JK Kennedy and also posed on the cover of Sports Illustrated in a sleeveless red Marimekko dress. This made it an immediate global sensation and the rest as they say is history!
The modern design team have created a distinctive Marimekko look that still reflects the vision of the founders and Scandinavian design in general which is characterized by simplicity, clean lines, bright colors and references to nature.
