Bedroom Design Trends for 2020
By Sarah Donnelly
Sleep lovers everywhere can cosy up to the latest bedroom trends for the year ahead. As we enter the new decade of design, the bedroom is the unsurpassed centre of stylish comfort, personalized charm and moody character.
Wallpaper is ever increasing in popularity throughout our homes, but in 2020 this trend enters the bedroom on a huge scale. In fact, the bigger the better. Look out for large florals, bird and animal motifs, chinoiserie and an abundance of foliage used a feature wall behind an upholstered headboard. Not a huge fan of wallpaper? No problem, oversized maximalist artworks are on trend too.
Styling bedside pedestals as beautiful vignettes comes to the fore in 2020. Let your personality shine with rejuvenating décor items, favourite books, scent diffusers and fresh flowers adorning your nightstand.
The Age of Asymmetry
Asymmetry is oh so in… don’t feel bound by identical pedestals or even your bedside lighting. Decorative cushion arrangements too have gone asymmetrical with odd numbers like threes and fives to give a more interesting style and latitude in fabric and pattern combinations.
Advances in mattress technology are maximized this year. In South Africa, our own Sealy Posturepedic’s sophisticated La Difference range takes the lead. Their trademarked Dermatex fabric with probiotic technology actually protects and regenerates your skin overnight! Other technological developments mean that this mattress relieves pressure points and optimizes temperature regulation. The coil inner spring system adapts constantly and subtly to your weight and body shape as you move in your sleep. Sheer bliss.
Your bed linens are not the place to skimp on your bedroom budget, but don’t get bogged down in the “thread count”. Technically, thread count means the number of threads woven together in a square inch so it is in fact impossible to have a thread count of 1200 as some manufacturers claim. Personally, I prefer a 400 single pick percale sheet because of the crisp, cool feel.
In 2020 lighting is just as much about form as it is function. Above-bed chandeliers and pendant pairs add a little something unexpected, and we’re seeing wall sconces take the place of bedside lamps.
Sustainable living and going green are certainly not just a fad. They are here to stay and growing ever increasingly important. As we bring the inside in, the modern bedroom is filled with foliage beside our beds, hanging baskets and beautiful ceramic pots.
Just Hanging Out
The bedroom is not just a place to sleep, but also a place to hang out.. quite literally. Hanging chairs in particular are cropping up in bedrooms everywhere. So too are vibrant accent chairs, chaises and love seats.
2020’s bedroom trends have something for every taste, but they all have one thing in common. Comfort! Dream on….
